Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that occurs when the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar (glucose) levels. Glucose is an essential source of energy for cells, and insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, helps regulate its absorption and utilization. There are several types of diabetes, with the two main types being Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

  1. Type 1 Diabetes:

    • Cause: Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
    • Onset: It often begins in childhood or adolescence, but it can occur at any age.
    • Treatment: People with Type 1 diabetes require insulin injections or an insulin pump to manage blood sugar levels.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes:

    • Cause: In Type 2 diabetes, the body becomes resistant to the effects of insulin, and the pancreas may not produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels.
    • Onset: It typically develops in adulthood, but it is increasingly seen in younger individuals due to lifestyle factors.
    • Treatment: Management may involve lifestyle modifications (diet and exercise), oral medications, injectable medications, or insulin.
  3. Gestational Diabetes:

    • Cause: This type of diabetes occurs during pregnancy when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs.
    • Risk: Women who have gestational diabetes have an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes later in life.
    • Management: It is usually managed through diet and exercise, but sometimes insulin may be needed.

Common symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, and slow healing of wounds. However, some people with diabetes may not experience noticeable symptoms.
